98pc of flagged online gambling content removed
Summary
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) informed the Dewan Rakyat that 98 percent of the online gambling content it flagged since 2025 has been taken down. From January 1 last year to October 31 this year, MCMC submitted 738,372 takedown requests, of which 724,879 were completed, and blocked 2,603 gambling websites. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching explained that the government uses an integrated enforcement approach, with police as the main enforcement agency under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, while MCMC handles regulatory action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Online Safety Act 2025. MCMC also collaborates with police on investigations, digital forensic analysis, and coordinated takedowns. From January to July this year, 573 gambling websites were blocked and 253,424 pieces of content removed. MCMC participated in police-led operations such as Op JOL and Op Soga XI to curb online gambling, including those linked to the 2026 World Cup, and worked with police and service providers through Op Pancing and Op Delusi to crack down on the misuse of Fake Base Transceiver Station equipment used to send bulk SMS leading users to illegal platforms.
