Paddy Power fined £2m for slow response to problem gambling
Summary
Paddy Power Betfair has agreed to pay £2m to the Gambling Commission due to failures in protecting customers exhibiting problem gambling behavior. The Commission identified instances where the bookmaker did not intervene quickly enough, such as a customer staking £86,000 in two weeks without manual review. Despite having systems to identify problem gambling, failures occurred because concerning activity – including high spending velocity, increased deposits, and overnight gambling – wasn’t identified or acted upon promptly. The Commission emphasized that over-reliance on automation and a failure to intervene when harm indicators are present put customers at risk. This is the second time in two years Paddy Power Betfair has faced regulatory action, previously paying £490,000 for sending promotions to self-excluded customers. Flutter Entertainment, the owner of Paddy Power Betfair, stated they take customer safety seriously and have implemented improvements, including a next-generation customer safety platform.
