Casino Beach to temporarily close for Pensacola Beach renourishment
Summary
The eight-mile, $35 million Pensacola Beach renourishment project is nearing completion, widening beaches and improving sand quality. A large pipe used to pump sand from the Gulf sits parallel to shore with ramps for pedestrian crossings, but it will be removed by week’s end. After removal, crews will till the newly placed sand, temporarily closing the Casino Beach area for about half a day to a day. Work has proceeded around the clock since March, moving westward from Park East toward Park West near Fort Pickens and the Gulf Islands National Seashore. About 1.2 million cubic yards of sand have been placed of a planned 1.5 million, and the project is expected to finish by May 19, potentially under budget.
