First Casino opens in Old San Juan
Summary
The Gran Casino Viejo San Juan has officially opened its doors in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, marking the first casino in the historic walled city. The establishment, located next to the Rumbao Hotel, represents a significant $11 million investment and the creation of 200 jobs. Unlike traditional casinos that focus primarily on gaming, this venue adopts a boutique-style format with European inspiration. It integrates gaming, gastronomy, and ambiance into a single space, featuring a main bar called El Bembé and a culinary offering overseen by Chef Michael Bartemes. The local brewery Ocean Lab will also contribute its brews to the selection. The casino offers extended hours, operating until 4:00 a.m. on Sundays through Wednesdays and until 5:00 a.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays. Executives from Grupo Orenes, the operators, emphasize that the casino aims to reposition Old San Juan as a premium destination. They plan to expand the facility in a second phase, which will include approximately 250 gaming machines and a sports betting area, currently in final negotiations. The model is designed to provide entertainment for all visitors, including those who do not gamble, by offering facilities to watch sporting events and socialize in a restaurant. This approach is intended to boost tourism and nightlife while contributing to the economic development of surrounding businesses.
