Politicians split over gambling regulation as bid to delay Bill fails
Summary
Members of the House of Keys (MHKs) voted against referring the Gambling Acts (Miscellaneous Amendment) Bill 2025 – known as the GSC Bill – to a committee for further review, effectively allowing it to proceed. The Bill aims to enhance the Gambling Supervision Commission’s inspection and investigation powers, including the ability to inspect premises. Kate Lord-Brennan MHK argued for a delay, expressing concerns about “harmful over-regulation” and a lack of industry consultation, stating the Bill needed “proper assessment.” Julie Edge MHK echoed these concerns, warning of potential damage to the economy. However, Treasury Minister Alex Allinson warned that referring the Bill to a committee could halt its progress, jeopardizing the island’s assessment by MoneyVal, which is scrutinizing the e-gaming sector for potential criminal activity. Home Affairs Minister Jane Poole Wilson emphasized the need to address “criminal infiltration” and prevent organized crime from exploiting the sector. Ultimately, the motion to delay failed with seven votes against thirteen, and MHKs proceeded to consider the Bill’s clauses and amendments.
