Cowichan Tribes poised to take full ownership of Duncan casino
Summary
The Cowichan Tribes, through its business wing Khowutzun Gaming Corporation, has reached an agreement to purchase full ownership of the Chances Cowichan casino from the Duncan Dabber Bingo Society. Currently, the society partners with the Tribes in running the facility. Cindy Daniels, chair of Khowutzun Gaming Corporation and chief of Cowichan Tribes, expressed gratitude to the Duncan Dabbers for a successful partnership that has provided local employment and supported non-profits. The Tribes currently receive approximately $1 million annually from the casino's profits, which funds community services. The sale, expected to close on April 1st, includes a seamless transition plan for employees and operations, with continued financial support for local non-profit organizations through the Duncan Dabber Bingo Society’s gaming grant program. The partnership began in 2006, leading to the casino's opening in 2007, and has distributed over $5 million to local groups since then.
