Japan to begin full-scale selection of new casino resort sites
Summary
The Japanese government is preparing to launch a new selection process for locations to host integrated resorts, following the approval of Osaka’s resort in 2023. The process, enabled by the 2018 Integrated Resort Implementation Law, aims to boost tourism by attracting large-scale complexes featuring casinos, hotels, and entertainment venues. Local governments will have six months, from May 2027, to submit applications. Hokkaido is currently considered a leading candidate, with two municipalities expressing interest, and Tokyo is also exploring development possibilities. A key consideration in the selection will be the applicants’ ability to secure substantial and transparent funding, as securing financing proved challenging for some applicants in the first round. Concerns regarding gambling addiction and public safety remain, and local opposition could pose hurdles to development.
