Nine Japanese police officers suspected of online casino gambling
Summary
The Hyogo Prefectural Police have referred nine male officers to prosecutors for suspected illegal gambling at online casinos. The police department has already imposed penalties, including pay cuts and suspensions, on the officers involved. Investigations revealed that the officers engaged in online casino gambling outside of work hours, with one senior officer in his 20s spending approximately ¥5 million (around $35,000 USD) over 3,000 bets between December and June. Six of the nine officers were stationed at the same police station. Additionally, nine other officers, including an inspector, were penalized for unrelated infractions like drinking and playing pachinko during work hours, and their supervisors also faced consequences. The police department stated they will reinforce ethical training for all staff in light of these incidents.
