Greece Battles Surge in Illegal Online Gambling: 11,000 Sites Blocked
Summary
Greece is actively combating a significant surge in illegal online gambling, with the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) blocking 11,000 websites offering illegal betting services. Despite this effort, approximately 10,000 new domains are registered monthly, creating a continuous enforcement challenge. The EEEP is seeking closer cooperation with the Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission to expedite the identification of illegal sites. A key priority is protecting vulnerable groups, particularly minors, as a European study indicates one in three 16-year-olds has participated in illegal online gambling. The EEEP plans to propose new legislation to expand its enforcement powers, including the ability to immediately suspend advertisements for illegal gambling. Furthermore, the Commission is reviewing casino licensing, aiming for clearer rules and a shift to a concession-based system for smaller casinos, while anticipating the launch of major Integrated Tourist Complexes (ITCs) with casinos in 2028. Investing in technology and internal restructuring are also crucial components of the EEEP’s strategy to effectively regulate the market and bring the illegal gambling industry under control.
