Trump to Mull Ending Tax on Sports Gambling Wins
Summary
President Donald Trump indicated he would “think about” eliminating the tax on gambling winnings during a conversation with the press on Air Force One. While his administration has already ended taxes on tips, Social Security, and overtime pay, gambling winnings are not currently included in these changes. According to the American Gaming Association, nearly 60% of American adults gamble annually, with significant participation in both physical casinos and sports betting. Currently, winnings over $600 are reported via W-2 forms, and winnings exceeding $5,000 are subject to a 24% withholding tax. Removing this tax could potentially encourage increased wagering and attract new gamblers, especially given the rapidly growing legal sports gambling market, which is projected to reach $30 million this year and generated $23.1 billion in bets during last year's Super Bowl.
