Historic track and casino bite dust as Exhibition Lands development moves ahead
Summary
The City of Edmonton is proceeding with the demolition of the historic Northlands Park racetrack and casino, along with surrounding structures, to facilitate the construction of 3,500 multi-family and rowhouse units. This project is part of a larger plan to revitalize the Exhibition Lands area, which includes a new fan park and the eventual demolition of the Northlands Coliseum. The development aims to create a “transit-oriented urban village” with denser housing, serviced by LRT lines and proximity to the river valley. While the project is expected to generate profit for the city, it also considers public feedback regarding event spaces, noise mitigation, and parking, with plans for a new urban farm and potential expansion of Bonanza Park. The Exhibition Lands development is progressing at a different pace than the Blatchford project, relying on private developers to drive housing construction based on market demand.
