For Georgia questions fast-tracked review of casino tax breaks for international tournaments
Summary
Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of Parliament from the For Georgia party, has raised concerns regarding the fast-tracked legislative package that proposes tax exemptions for casinos hosting international gambling tournaments. Sharashidze argued that the limited time provided for review prevents proper scrutiny of the amendments and questioned whose interests are being served by the expedited procedure.
In response, Shota Berekashvili, chair of Parliament’s Economic Policy Committee, defended the bill, stating that these international tournaments are intended to boost tourism and economic activity, particularly during the off-season. He compared the events to sporting competitions rather than standard gambling.
The proposal, introduced by Georgian Dream lawmakers, seeks to attract foreign visitors by exempting casinos from gambling business fees if tournament prize pools exceed GEL 3 million. Additionally, foreign participants would be exempt from income tax on their tournament winnings.
