G2E Panel Details $34 Million in Casino Fines for AML and KYC Failures
Summary
A Global Gaming Expo (G2E) panel reported $34 million in fines imposed on casino operators in September for anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) violations. Melissa Gomez Nelson, partner with Dentons US, detailed the enforcement actions during the session "Identifying and Managing Emerging Financial Crime Risks." One casino allowed a man to gamble on 80 separate days without verifying his source of funding. Others were cited for systemic AML oversight weaknesses and for ignoring a high-risk designation after receiving a tip.
Experts including Abigail Singley (PwC), Elise Lebourg (Ernst & Young), and Dave Foppert (DraftKings) stressed that regulators now prioritize demonstrated effectiveness over paper compliance. Operators must implement true risk-based programs, update risk assessments, and bridge communication gaps between compliance and business units such as marketing and product teams. Static programs and checkbox exercises will not meet current enforcement standards.
