UK gambling giant blames tax hikes for axing 400 jobs
Summary
Entain, the UK gambling giant that owns Ladbrokes and Coral, has announced plans to cut approximately 400 global customer care roles across 11 countries, including the UK, in response to rising tax burdens. The company warned that a proposed doubling of machine games duty to 40 per cent in the Budget would add £100 million in annual UK retail costs. Chief executive Stella David cautioned that further tax hikes could trigger widespread betting shop closures and thousands of sector job losses. The customer care redundancy consultation follows an earlier announcement two months ago confirming 500 global cuts across corporate and technology functions. Rival operators are also cutting costs in response to tax increases, with William Hill parent company Evoke closing 278 high-street shops over the past year.
