Canada’s gambling SMEs generate average revenue of C$554,800: Where does online gaming fit?
Summary
Canada’s gambling industry is largely composed of small and medium-sized enterprises, with average revenue of C$554,800 in 2024. Of 1,040 establishments recorded in 2025, 561 had employees, and most were microbusinesses or small businesses. Online gaming extends beyond operators to include game studios, payment processors, cybersecurity providers, affiliates, marketing agencies, compliance consultants, and other specialist firms, many of which are small. Ontario’s competitive iGaming market processed C$82.7 billion in wagers in 2024-25, up 31%, with gaming revenue of C$3.2 billion. Casino games dominated, accounting for about 84% of wagers and three-quarters of revenue. The national figures show 84.9% of gambling SMEs were profitable. Provincial differences—Ontario’s open market versus government-controlled platforms elsewhere—create both challenges and opportunities for SMEs that can specialize and adapt.
