Police bust real-time online gambling syndicate
Summary
Police in New Delhi have dismantled a sophisticated online gambling syndicate that operated during the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The operation, based in Madhu Vihar, east Delhi, utilized mobile applications and live digital platforms to facilitate betting. Three individuals were arrested, including Manish Jain (50), a rental business owner; Abhishek Jain (26), a B.Com graduate; and Arpit Gupta (40), who runs an ice-cream agency. The accused were allegedly using advanced betting software, live-streaming devices, and multiple mobile phones to monitor odds and coordinate with punters in real time. Police received a tip on May 23 about the illegal activities. During a raid on the upper floor of a building in Madhu Vihar, officers found live-streaming of an IPL match on tablet devices and intercepted calls coordinating betting activities. Although the accused attempted to flee upon seeing the police, they were apprehended. Authorities recovered nine mobile phones, two laptops, two tablets, and betting-related records from the scene. The operation was reportedly set to place heavy bets during the Lucknow Super Giants vs. Punjab Kings match.
