A recent study by Epic Research reveals that diagnoses of gambling disorder have risen by over 60% in U.S. states that have legalized sports betting. In contrast, diagnoses declined in states where the practice remains illegal. Theincrease is most pronounced among young adults aged 18 to 29, particularly men, while adults aged 30 to 49 show the highest overall rates.
While some expertsargue that increased access directly correlates with higher harm, the American Gaming Association suggests the rise may reflect better screening and awareness rather thanan actual increase in addiction rates. However, clinicians and researchers warn that the true scale of the problem may be understated, asonly a small fraction of those suffering from gambling disorders seek professional treatment.
