Gambling licence for controversial North Shields slots casino to be decided
Summary
North Tyneside Council’s licensing committee will decide on March 30th whether to grant a gambling permit for a new Admiral slots casino at the Collingwood Centre in North Shields. The proposal has faced significant opposition, with around 130 objections lodged due to concerns about anti-social behavior and proximity to schools, as well as existing high gambling participation rates in the area (59%). Despite initial refusal of planning permission, an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate overturned this decision. The applicant, Luxury Leisure, commissioned a report by Leveche Associates Ltd, which concluded that the casino would not negatively impact the local community, citing observations from existing Admiral venues. The application includes conditions such as CCTV, staff training, and a ‘Challenge 25’ ID policy, as well as offering self-exclusion options for customers.
