Alberta is launching a regulated private online gambling market, opening registration for operators following amendments to its Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act. Currently, only PlayAlberta is legally regulated, accounting for roughly 23-32% of the province’s iGaming market. The move is driven by the widespread availability of unregulated iGaming and a desire to protect Albertans, particularly youth, by implementing safeguards like age restrictions, responsible gaming tools, and intervention for problem gambling. The Alberta iGaming Corporation will oversee the licensed sector, mirroring iGaming Ontario, while the AGLC will continue regulatory functions. This initiative also aims to increase provincial revenue, as Ontario’s iGaming market generated $3.2 billion last fiscal year.
