NSW GambleAware Week targets stigma with lived experience
Summary
GambleAware Week, a NSW Government initiative running from October 19 to 26, aims to challenge the stigma surrounding gambling harm and encourage open conversations. One in five people in NSW are affected by gambling harm, yet many suffer in silence due to fear of judgment. The campaign highlights that gambling harm can affect anyone, impacting finances, relationships, mental health, and work, and often extends to family, friends, and colleagues. Peer support workers with lived experience of gambling harm and recovery play a key role in reducing isolation and showing that recovery is possible. Tim Gray, a GambleAware peer support worker, emphasised the importance of open dialogue, while Office of Responsible Gambling director Alison Parkinson stressed that gambling harm is a health issue, not a personal failing. Free, confidential support is available through GambleAware services including counselling, online and telephone support, and self-help tools.
