The Dutch Online Gambling Operators Association (VNLOK) is taking Meta to court, alleging that nine out of 10 gambling advertisements on Facebook originate from illegal gambling sites, with illegal operators also heavily advertising on Instagram. VNLOK noted that Meta removed fewer than one in six illegal advertisements in June and July. The association wants Meta to do more to prevent illegal gambling advertising on its platforms. VNLOK chairman Bjorn Fuchs said the organization had alerted Meta to the problem multiple times and requested cooperation on a structural solution, but this "has not delivered the results we hoped for." The VNLOK is also asking the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, to approve a plan on Tuesday that would grant the Dutch Gambling Authority greater powers to fine platforms like Meta when they fail to adequately combat illegal gambling commercials.
