A 23‑year‑old LSU student, Joseph Contente of Baton Rouge, was arrested on charges including gambling, cyberstalking, extortion, unlawful wagering and harassment. Police say he acted as a bookie, operating an illegal online gambling ring through text messages and the online casino "The Vault." Wagers and collections were handled via CashApp and Venmo. Victims reported receiving harassing calls and messages after failing to pay debts. Evidence from Contente’s Venmo account shows over $167,000 in debits and $147,000 in credits linked to the operation between February 2025 and April 2026. He posted a $25,000 bond and was released.
