Tasmania should still implement own gambling ad ban, says MLC
Summary
Independent MLC Meg Webb has welcomed the federal government's package of gambling advertising reforms, set to take effect in January 2027, but insists Tasmania should not delay its own, more comprehensive ban. The Legislative Council previously passed a motion in December 2023 calling for a complete ban on gambling advertising and sponsorship in state-owned venues, including the proposed Macquarie Point stadium and on player uniforms, with a deadline of December 2026. Webb argues there is no justification for the Rockliff government to postpone the state ban, especially given the federal government’s acknowledgement of the harm caused by gambling advertising. The federal reforms include a ban on ads during daytime sports and a cap on the number of ads per hour, but fall short of a full ban. State Treasurer Eric Abetz stated the Tasmanian government supports a nationally consistent approach to implementing the federal reforms.
