Ex-police commissioner Hoong Wee Teck appointed chairman of Gambling Regulatory Authority
Summary
Hoong Wee Teck, a veteran of 38 years with the Singapore Police Force, including 11 years as commissioner, has been appointed chairman of the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA), effective April 1. He currently serves as the GRA’s deputy chairman. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the appointment, also acknowledging the contributions of outgoing chairman Tan Tee How, who served for approximately eight years and successfully maintained gambling free from criminal influence and minimized societal harms. The GRA was established in 2022 as a single regulator for all gambling forms in Singapore, allowing the government to proactively address evolving gambling trends and products. Currently, the GRA and MHA are developing regulations for blind boxes and trading card packs to mitigate gambling inducement risks.
